Frequently Asked Questions

What is Tallow?

Tallow is a natural ingredient made from rendered animal fat, traditionally used for centuries in skincare as a deeply nourishing moisturizer.

In modern tallow skincare, it’s valued for its unique compatibility with the skin. Tallow contains a profile of fatty acids similar to the skin’s natural oils (sebum), allowing it to absorb easily and support the skin barrier.

At Genesis Tallow, we use grass-fed and finished beef suet, which we render in-house in small batches to ensure quality and freshness. This creates a clean, nutrient-rich base that naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with skin-supportive lipids that help maintain moisture, softness, and balance.

What Are The Benefits Of Using Tallow?

Tallow has been used for generations as a natural moisturizer and is valued in modern tallow skincare for its ability to support the skin barrier with simple, recognizable ingredients.

Our grass-fed/finished tallow is carefully rendered into a clean, nutrient-rich base. It naturally contains fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, along with fatty acids that closely resemble the lipids found in healthy skin.

Because of this, tallow works in harmony with your skin to:

  • Support the skin barrier
  • Lock in moisture and reduce dryness
  • Leave skin feeling soft, nourished, and balanced

Key fatty acids include oleic, stearic, and palmitic acids, along with naturally occurring compounds like CLA, studied for supporting healthy-looking skin.

Rather than forcing change, tallow works with your skin, supporting its natural function for a hydrated, resilient glow.

What Is Tallow Used For?

Tallow gives the skin the moisture and nutrients it needs to promote healing, without clogging your pores.

Use tallow on:

Dry/chapped skin, Wrinkles , Eczema, Acne, Scars, Psoriasis, Burns, Cuts, Stretch Marks, Calloused skin, Rashes, Sun damaged skin, Diaper rash, Cradle Cap, Rosacea, Daily Face and All Body Moisturizer, Tattoos, Dry Lips, Makeup Remover.

Will Tallow Clog Pores?

No, tallow is unlikely to clog pores for most skin types.

Tallow closely resembles the natural oils (sebum) your skin already produces, which allows it to absorb easily and support the skin rather than sit on top of it.

Many people find that tallow actually helps balance the skin, reducing dryness while supporting a healthy skin barrier.

For those who prefer a lighter feel, especially if you’re acne-prone; our Face Tallow Whip is formulated with hemp seed oil to keep it lightweight and fast-absorbing.

As always, a little goes a long way.

Whipped vs Solid

The main difference is the texture and ease of applying. Whipped Tallow is light, and fluffy. Whipped tallow is eaier to apply to the face and delicate spots. It's also a bit easier to apply to little ones. With the solid balm, you'll have to scoop it out, heat it up in your hands and then apply. It's the same product, same ingredients and recipe.. just in different forms. The results will be the same and it will also feel the same once its rubbed in.

Why Is The Consistency Of My Tallow Different From My Last Jar?

Tallow Balm is all natural with no toxins or nasties, meaning the scent, consistency, or colour can vary from batch to batch. We can assure you that we use the exact same ingredients and method each time. Because tallow is fat/oil based, it will get hard when it’s cold and will get smooth when warm. If it is hard, simply rub it between your hands to heat it up and then apply it to the desired area.

Does Tallow Smell Like Beef?

Don’t worry, no one’s going to mistake your skincare for beef cologne.

Well-rendered tallow skincare has a very mild, natural scent. At Genesis Tallow, we render and purify our tallow in-house to create a clean, neutral base with little to no lingering odour.

Our scented products are blended with pure essential oils for a soft, natural aroma, while our unscented options remain as close to neutral as possible.

The result is a simple, skin-nourishing moisturizer that smells subtle and fresh, not like beef.

What Is The Expected Shelf Life Of Tallow?

Tallow is best used within 12 months of opening. Keep it in a cool room and stay away from direct sunlight.

Can I Use Tallow Balm On My Baby?

Absolutely! We highly recommend only using the Naked Balm (unscented) or the Baby Whip

Use it for:

Whole body moisturizer, rashes/nappy rash, dry patches, cradle cap, baby acne, Diaper cream, sunburn's, scratches, and always avoid contact with eyes.

Is Tallow Vegan?

No, tallow is not vegan, as it is derived from animal fat.

At Genesis Tallow, we source from local Vancouver Island & BC farms that raise animals in open, pasture-based environments, using grass-fed and finished practices without added hormones or antibiotics.

We believe in a more traditional, nose-to-tail approach, where every part of the animal is respected and used with intention. By rendering tallow in-house, we help reduce waste by upcycling a nutrient-rich ingredient that might otherwise be discarded.

For those seeking natural, non-toxic skincare alternatives, tallow offers a simple, time-tested option rooted in ancestral practices.
